Sparky Update...Again

I had another check-up today - I'm 39.5 weeks along - due this Friday.  I've finally made some more progress and am now 3 cm dilated and 80% effaced.  I'm a happy girl.  That means all the inconsistent cramping I was feeling this weekend was doing its job.  Now, if we could just get it to be consistent, and say, 5 minutes apart for an hour or more so I can head to the hospital and meet this little guy/gal!

My doctor doesn't estimate birth weights because it's so unreliable, but he did measure the head today (not really a precise measurement either in his mind) and it's measuring right at 39.5 weeks.  I have completely lost my mucus plug starting Thursday and continuing all weekend and today (ew!) and the doctor said my bag of waters is bulging.

The hope is that I have more significant labor before my water breaks and the hard core stuff starts.  With Jack I was only about 2 cm when my water broke and that wasn't ideal.  As of now my next doctor's appointment is Monday and I will be induced next Thursday or Friday.  Fingers crossed that we won't need either of those things!!

Quick Sparky Update

I had a check-up on Monday and my progress has not changed - still 1cm dilated and 70% effaced.  The doctor tried to "stir things up a bit," which was rather painful, so hopefully it did some good.  Time will tell.  He did mention that history tends to repeat itself and I was four days late with Jack, so I shouldn't get too anxious just yet.

That's all we know until next Monday.  Patiently waiting...

Final Sparky Ultrasound

We had our final sneak peek at little Sparky on Tuesday and it got me even more excited to meet him/her.  I mean, how cute are these cheeks (profile shot of face looking left)???
And this (left) hand - I wish I could just reach out and hold it!!
The countdown is drawing to a close.  I will be 37 weeks pregnant tomorrow.  As of Tuesday I was 1cm dilated and 70% effaced.  Doesn't mean Sparky's coming tomorrow, but progress is progress, so I'll take it.

Can't wait to meet this little guy or gal!!

36 Weeks

I am 36 weeks along with Sparky as of yesterday.  Things are still going well, but I have to admit I'm getting to the uncomfortable phase.  I've been lucky with my sleep so far, so the fact that this week I started tossing and turning isn't the end of the world.  It's only 4 more weeks.  I'm also experiencing lots of aches and pains, especially in my back and of course stomach.  I can't sit or stand too long and I can't walk too fast.  I have LOTS of tightening and just general uncomfortableness.  But again, it's only 4 more weeks.

Sparky is very active and I can tell that he/she is running out of room by the jabs I receive when I lean forward at my desk for too long or let my bladder get too full.

I am getting very excited to meet this little guy/gal - we're getting so close!!  My next doctor's appointment is Tuesday where he will check to see if I'm dilated or making any progress.  I will go weekly from here on out.

I saw this cute idea for getting the sibling involved in the belly pictures (wish I had seen it about 36 weeks ago!), but Jack didn't quite cooperate.  You get the idea though...

Sparky Update - 29 Weeks

I had a doctor visit this week, so I figured it was time for a Sparky update.  I am 29 weeks along today and feeling pretty good.  Starting to get some aches and pains when I move too fast or do too much, and starting to lose a little of my energy, but generally, still doing well.  So far I've only had one crazy calf cramp, but I'm sure there are more of those to come.  The heartburn has continued as well - almost every morning around 4:00 I take 2 Tums, but I'm still falling right back asleep, so again, nothing to complain about.  I took my glucose test this week and they said no news is good news. Since it's now been 3 days, I'm assuming I'm in the clear.

We had an ultrasound at our visit this week and got a really good 3D picture of Sparky.  I think he/she looks just like Jack did in the womb.
The heartbeat was 150, which according to Dr. Herrmann is a "dude."  Baby is getting very strong with lots of kicks and punches.  Sometimes we have to have a little chat about letting Mommy get some sleep.

Here's a picture of me today - getting big!

Sparky Update - 20.5 Weeks

We had our big ultrasound today, and Sparky looks great!  All the measurements point to a healthy baby, which is a relief.  He or she currently weighs about 12 ounces and my official due date is now September 9.  Too bad babies never come on their due dates because 9/9/11 would be a cool birthday to have.

I only gained 1 pound this month, which was a relief after hitting 12 pounds as of my 17 week check-up (that seems like a lot to me considering most of the weight gain should occur in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters).

They did say my placenta is currently anterior, which means it's within 2 cm of my cervix.  Most often that corrects itself throughout the pregnancy, but if not I will require a c-section.  That brings me to my current dilemma.  You may remember that I had a c-section with Jack after I got stuck at 6 cm dilated, his heart rate kept dropping and he was face up.  So that gives me two options for this birth: schedule a c-section or attempt a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean).

Most people will not understand why this is a dilemma for me (Jason included), but I was absolutely crushed during Jack's birth when I didn't even make it to the pushing phase of labor. In my mind, that is true child birth, and I didn't get to experience it.  Of course, those who have been through it will tell me I'm not missing much and I realize it's no cakewalk, it's just something I've always wanted to experience despite the pain.  BUT there is a slight risk with a VBAC (about 1%) that the c-section incision in my cervix could burst during pushing and worst case scenario I could lose my cervix and possibly even the baby.  I would never forgive myself if I selfishly wanted to experience childbirth as it was meant to be and in turn put my baby's life in danger.  The doctor told me today that a new study shows that the type of incision I had on my cervix (double sewn or something) leads to less risky VBACs, but still, is it worth the risk??

I am leaning towards the c-section despite my desire to experience a vaginal birth. There are things that may force me to have a c-section in the end anyway (i.e. the aforementioned anterior placenta and the fact that Jack was 8 lbs, 7 oz and second babies tend to be larger than first).  But my second dilemma is that I don't really want to choose my child's birthday.  When I told Jason this he thought I was nuts, and my doctor seemed to agree with Jason today, though he was trying to appear indifferent.  I see the pros in scheduling the date, especially with a toddler and a dog for which to arrange care, but again it's not how child birth was meant to me.

I told my doctor I'd make my decisions before my appointment next month, so we'll see where I end up.  Decisions, decisions.

Sparky Update - 17 Weeks

I had a doctor's appointment Tuesday, so I thought a Sparky update was in order.  All is well - heartbeat was 150 (chick heartbeat per my doctor - you may remember Jack's was a "chick" heartbeat at the beginning too).  We got an ultrasound, so we saw Sparky's arms moving all around!  Baby is getting big already!

I had a little scare Monday morning - I ran back into the house to grab something and my heel slid on the hardwoods.  I wiped out!  I landed hard on my knee (luckily not my belly!).  I was worried about Sparky so I called the doctor, but because I wasn't spotting and my appointment was scheduled for the next day, I opted not to go in.  I was a nervous Nelly for those 24 hours, but all is well!

During the ultrasound, Sparky was spread eagle for all to see, so the doctor was trying his best (and succeeding) in keeping our view away from the important part that we didn't want to see.  But then, as he flipped the machine to 3D mode, we caught a very quick full frontal glimpse.  Jason and I both think we saw a penis, but to our untrained eyes for that quick second, we really aren't sure.  We're still operating under the assumption that baby's gender is a surprise, and we'll find out in September if we were right at 17 weeks.

Here's a belly picture at 17 weeks - getting big already!
Here was 17 weeks with Jack:
What a difference a 2nd pregnancy makes!

Quick update about me: I'm feeling almost back to normal these days.  The nausea was not nearly as bad this time around, but lasted a bit longer (I was still feeling it a couple days a week at 15 weeks or so).  I'm still pretty tired, but have gotten some of my energy back.  Some nights I make it to my old bedtime (9:30 or 10:00 - I know, I'm a night owl!), but some nights I'm pooped and ready for bed as soon as Jack goes down at 8:00.  I haven't really had many other symptoms yet, aside from my first bout with heartburn last night.  I took 2 Tums and it quickly went away, so nothing to grouch about (yet!).  Enjoying the 2nd trimester!!
